You'd could use Evite.com where you can post an invitation. It's actually better because there's no hassle with printed paper. Most people have E-mail and an Internet Connection.
One of the advantages of Evite is that it will keep a tally of Yeses, Nos, and Maybes. That way, you can monitor who can or can't attend.
When you're planning out how much food you're going to get for the party, you can measure by the number of RSVPs. You don't have to wait for responses by the mail or lose track by word of mouth.
MySpace.com does something similar with its Events Calendar. you can send out an event and it will notify everyone. However, MySpace doesn't have a Maybe answer.
Evite.com specially caters to Guest Lists. On top of that, it's based off of E-mail addresses. With MySpace, your friends have to actually be on your MySpace Friends List in order to receive such an invitation.
Depending on when you're going to throw your party, Evite would be your best solution. However, that's not to say you can't advertise on both.
